How can an Occupational Therapist help me?

If you're having trouble with any of your activities of daily living, i.e. things like getting up out of bed, on and off chairs, on and off the toilet, using the toilet, getting washed - using the bath or shower, getting dressed, getting around your home, going up and down the stairs, getting in and out of your home, getting out into your own community, making snacks, meals or drinks, an occupational therapist may be able to help you.

An occupational therapist may teach you how to do things in easier, safer, new ways, so that you regain, or retain your independence.   An OT may suggest and help arrange to get assistive equipment or home adaptations to enable you to be independent.

These might include things like grab rails, stair rails, newel post rails, outdoor handrails, bathseats and bathboards, bathlifts, level access showers, special baths, stairlifts, through floor lifts, ramps, half steps, adapted cutlery, mobility scooters, wheelchairs, seating systems, pressure care cushions, raised toilet seats, toilet frames, integrated toilet seats with frames, toilet lifters, riser recliner armchairs, bed raisers, chair raisers, leg lifters, bed leavers, commodes, male or female urinals, extensions to your home for extra bathroom or bedroom facilities.... in fact, there are lots more things.

What you might need will depend on your individual circumstances, your lifestyle, your aspirations, hopes and desires.  All these things can be discussed with your occupational therapist who will help work out the best thing for you.
